Wis and Townswomen's Guilds

Summary

Newtown, Tewkesbury WI At our July meeting, Gillian White gave a presentation entitled The Huggable History of the Teddy Bear. This was no fuzzy tale of cute teddies, but a review of the history of the 20th century as reflected by the market fashions for toy bears. Early bears were realistic, inspired by Theodore Roosevelt, the President of the United States. We were shown a black, mourning bear in memory of lives lost on the Titanic and austere bears from both wars, made of cloth not mohair; often in uniform, always patriotic. In more modern times, adults collect and trade bears but, happily, Teddy can still be of comfort to a child.

There was still time for members to join our August Outing to Avoncroft and Webbs and volunteers were signed up to help on our tombola and book stall at Tewkesbury Hospital fete during the bank holiday weekend.
