Where I Live ; Community News
Fairford June Lewis 01285 712312 Fairford History Society responded to nearly 40 family or local history enquiries in 2009. The secretary reports that the strangest coincidence was that of two members of the Cowley family who visited the Archive Room within a week of each other - each unaware of the other's existence. It turned out that one was the descendant of Isaac Cowley, who founded a church in South Africa. It then transpired that this Isaac Cowley had conducted the marriage ceremony of the other visitor's great grandmother. Now, Nicholas Cowley of Johannesburg, South Africa, a fourthgeneration descendant of Isaac Cowley (who left Fairford for Natal in 1859) would like to hear of any other Cowley family members. His email address is: cowleynp@sabc.co.za. We await the results of the photographic Cotswold Tree Competition in which three entries were made for Fairford: the black mulberry at Moor Farm in the most interesting history section, a maple at New Milton in the Back Lane as the most colourful and a copper beech at Coln House School as the tree most typical of its species.
It just happens that the guest speaker at the Fairford Preservation Trust meeting on March 26 is an expert from the National Tree Council. The trust, set up by Dr Charlton Shaw in 1965, embodies the preservation of the natural environment, in particular the planning and maintenance of trees. Apperley & Deerhurst Ann Wiseman 01452 780735 ann@wisemen.co.uk Apperley & Deerhurst Playgroup are holding one of their popular Curry & Quiz nights on Saturday, March 27, at 8pm in Apperley Village Hall. A big well done to the cross country runners from Deerhurst & Apperley School who braved the bitterly cold weather last week to participate in this event. The school had their biggest team on record with nine children taking part. Well done to Henry, Harry S, Harry M, Isaac, Josh, Naomi, Storm, Sophie and Abigail. On Tuesday you may see children from Deerhurst & Apperley school in nonschool uniform and with strange looking hair. This is because the children on the School Council have requested a Mad Hair and non-school uniform day to raise money for the Haiti Appeal. There is a service of Morning Worship at Apperley Church tomorrow at 11am, led by the Local Ministry Team, and everyone is very welcome to come along.Up Hatherley David Reynolds 01242 238429 flat- brokefilms@fsmail.net Jill Robinson of Long Mynd Avenue reminded me that on the February 25 Caernarvon Park play area in Up Hatherley will be 10 years old. It was opened on a crisp February Saturday morning by Deputy Mayor Daphne Pennell, with the St James Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade providing the fanfare. It was the start of the bigger scheme that was to convert a drab playing field into a beautiful park. A small committee of people worked so hard to get this park together for all residents to enjoy. The late Martin Burford was a founder member of that committee and he will always be remembered for his help and advice and hands-on work that he put in to the making of Caernarvon Park. An excellent 18-page A5 magazine entitled The Combined Histories of Caernarvon Park and Pals of Caernarvon Park was published in 2005 and written by Linda Breeze. It records the history of the project and includes digital photos on a CD as well. Contact Jill on 694828 for further information. A Ladies Fashion Show in aid of CLIC Sargent (caring for children with cancer) is to be held at St Margaret's Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday, March 17.
