Tributes Abound but Mario Could Be the King of Kings

Summary

MOST tribute bands claim to be as close as possible to the real thing. But Mario Kombou has a genuine claim to be the best Elvis impersonator on the circuit. In Memphis four years ago the 44-year- old was named the World Champion Elvis. Donna Presley, the King's cousin, declared him "the best Elvis since Elvis". "I'm Greek so my features are similar which might have a something to do with it," he says. "But really I have been successful because I approach it like an actor studying for a role.

"I try to not only mimic his voice and mannerisms, but think like him and respond to things as he would. The whole time on stage I'm in character so the illusion is never broken." His show The Elvis Years 1954-1977 is at The Everyman on Thursday and will take the audience through the King's entire musical career. With the help of a live 10-piece band, Mario performs everything from his first demo, through the early RCA hits, the movie years, the '68 Comeback Special and the final years in Las Vegas.
