Thunders Into Action at Raf Fairford Next Weekend. Currently Deployed in Both Afghanistan and Libya. Ian Snelling Explains What to Expect

Summary

WHAT can the crowd expect to see from the Tornado GR4 role demo team? It's different to a normal flying display as it aims to show how we can employ the jet on operations in support of people on the ground. There will be two aircraft working together as we do on operations in Afghanistan and Libya providing air support to a team on the ground. There will be some loud bangs to accompany the noise of two aircraft in full re-heat as our pyrotechnics team simulate strafe, brimstone and 1,000lb bomb attacks.

How close are the manoeuvres to those you perform on operations? Many are very similar, although in order to keep the formation as close to the crowd as we can there are subtle changes. During the demonstration we perform shows of force, missile breaks, strafe attacks, brimstone attack and an Enhanced Paveway II loft attack. At a time when the UK military is very busy on operations around the world, why is it important that the RAF shows the public its capabilities? Air shows are an important way for the RAF to communicate with the public about what we are doing. Many people do not realise that the Tornado GR4 is deployed both in Afghanistan and Libya.
