Teenagers' Parents Underestimate Dangers

Summary


MOST parents underestimate the dangers their teenage children could be in when they drive, or are driven, in cars, a survey shows.

As many as 74 per cent of accidental teenage deaths happen on the road, but only 11 per cent of parents polled considered driving the biggest threat to younger adults. Drugs (31 per cent) were seen as the main threat to teenagers, followed by drinking (25 per cent) and gun/knife crime (25 per cent). Four per cent of the 18,500 AA members surveyed by Populus reckoned teenagers were most at risk from smoking, while one per cent felt the biggest threat came from sex.
