Summary

If You've taken a stroll on Tewkesbury Ham recently you'll have seen it draped in a yellow haze of buttercups. They'll all be gone soon, because in accordance with a tradition that dates back at least 200 years, the Ham is mown once a year - and always before 14 July.

The word ham is Anglo-Saxon in origin and refers to an area of grassland completely or almost surrounded by water. Tewkesbury Ham is an island between the Severn and Mill Avon and was created when the latter waterway was dug out by monks to power their corn mill in the 13th century.
