Stroud Symphony Orchestra, Holy Trinity Church,Stroud

Summary

A Touch of Spring fever came to Holy Trinity Church when the Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Jonathan Trim, defied the cold weather and enchanted the audience with the sound of cuckoos, hunting horns and the onset of spring.

In a programme where all three works had a pastoral element the orchestra had the audience spellbound. Jonathan Trim compiles his concert programmes very carefully and has a knack of choosing an opening work that will instantly engage his audience; he then builds upon this rapport to introduce more complex works. This concert was no exception. Dvorak's In Nature's Realm, with the clarinet theme invoking thoughts of meadowlands and the horn section heralding the huntsman, brings to mind themes from Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony as well as hints of Dvorak's future work The New World Symphony.
