State Spending 'Unsustainable' ; Letters

Summary

IT was interesting to read about councils overspending on their budgets (Echo, October 7) but no one has come up with a sensible solution.

The basic principle is if you do not have the income you cannot spend it. Free bus passes should be stopped as it encourages unnecessary travel. The qualification age should be raised to 65 and each new bus pass should have an administration fee of Pounds 10 to cover the cost. The minimum fare per journey Pounds 1 - great value. Police: They do a great job but their pension scheme is too generous, just like MPs and must be reformed. Why is the Chief Constable retiring before 60/65, when he has many useful years of work left? I am informed that Pounds 300 of every council tax bill goes to support the pensions of the employees. It is completely unsustainable and all Government backed schemes must be changed to one uniform pension for all, ie MPs, civil servants, police, fire service, judges, doctors, nurses, teachers etc - keep it simple.
