Yet there's more to this member of the squash family than mere theatrical prop and ignoring them for the rest of the year means missing out on an easy to grow, versatile crop. Undemanding and relatively disease and pest-free, many squash will store well and those with a rambling habit can be grown on supports where space is short or allowed they are wonderful roasted or turned into soups. Farmer Ashley Dickenson fully appreciates their qualities and for the past seven years he has filled his Bisley farm shop with a range of squash and ornamental gourds. The variety is staggering, from giant orange pumpkins to tiny knobbly gourds.
