IN the not too distant past, a trip to Britain's second biggest city was a less than an inspiring experience. The Birmingham I often visited as a child left me with memories of endless grey tower blocks and a tired-looking Bullring shopping centre. But the Brum that I returned to this year was a much more attractive place. Many of the skyscrapers have gone and the centre has seen a massive amount of investment that has given the city a huge lift.

The Bullring has been completely revamped. Some of the new shops are rather expensive but Selfridges' magnificent food hall is worth a visit in itself.
