Summary
A BRONZE sculpture bought in the 1960s as a doorstop for 10 shillings could be worth around Pounds 1,000.
The piece of art, by the 19th century French sculptor Jean Louis Gregoire, was one of the hidden treasures unearthed during an antiques valuation day in Cricklade by experts from Cirencester- based Moore Allen & Innocent auctioneers. Antiques owners paid Pounds 3 per item for auctioneer Philip Allwood, a familiar face from his appearances on television's Bargain Hunt, Flog It and Dickinson's Real Deal, and his colleague David Greatwood to cast an eye over their heirlooms. Philip valued the Gregoire sculpture depicting Venus with a dolphin at her feet - which its owner bought "for about 10 bob" to prop open a creaky door - at Pounds 800 to Pounds 1,200. Other discoveries included a Royal Doulton vase decorated with deer and fawns by the celebrated Victorian ceramics designer Hannah Barlow, valued at Pounds 600 to Pounds 1,000 and a Japanese Meiji period okimono in ivory of a young mother and three children, valued at Pounds 500-Pounds 800.See the full content of this document
