No Mercy From Us On the Court ; Letters

Summary

I WOULD like to comment on the statements (Echo, July 3) by Val Dickinson about the East Gloucestershire Tennis Club. She says the oldest playing member is over 80 and there is a four who must be in their late 70s - they place the ball for each other to hit. I am nearer 90 than 80 and I know two of our group who are of a similar age. We don't place the ball for each other - we show no mercy to our opponents. How flattering to think Val takes us to be under 80. Does anyone remember Fred Perry playing an exhibition match at Major Millman's "One 40" club in Old Bath Road in about the '50s? He arrived with his brother-in-law Walter Pidgeon, the wartime actor and their respective wives.

Fred proceeded to entertain us with his brilliant, albeit humorous play against the county champion, Mr Bouquet, who stood no chance! I still wear Fred Perry shorts - very fashionable. I recently saw a young lad in Jersey with "Perry" written across his shirt. He had no idea who this was but said it was the latest fashion in designer shirts. We all hope to see "Murray" on future shirts.
