Summary


Cheltenham Borough Council openly admitted that it would have broken disability discrimination law if it had known of Christine Laird's psychiatric history. The council felt that her psychiatric history would have resulted in it not employing her if it had known about her state. High Court papers stated "the council was wrongly advised that she was medically fit for the job and it proceeded to implement its decision to employ her".

Alistair Campbell has talked openly about his nervous breakdown in 1986 and the bouts of depression he has experienced since. Despite this, Tony Blair appointed Mr Campbell as his Press Secretary, arguably a more powerful post in the UK than Tony Blair's own.
