Summary


Former Detective Superintendent JOHN BENNETT continues his series on Mary Bastholm's disappearance in Gloucester in 1968. Searches had been carried out and a possible clue emerged when Monopoly pieces were found near a canal bridge - Mary had been carrying the game when she went missing. Scotland Yard Detective Chief Superintendent William Marchand decided areas of the Gloucester-Sharpness canal were to be searched: ONE morning, Sergeant Clive Jefferies put his head around the Stroud CID door and told me the underwater recovery section had been requested by Marchand and ordered to carry out a search - hunting 20 yards each side of the bridge.

My normal work was put on hold and the sergeant, who had undertaken diving while in the Army, mustered the other members of the section. They were PC Peter Underhill, a former naval diver; PC Roger Reynault, an experienced amateur diver; PC Roger Sandal and me - both of us being strong swimmers with Life Saving Association training and other ASA awards.
