AS people picked up their Echo for just two-and-a-half old pennies in September 1961 (just over 1p in today's money), they were shocked to read of the disappearance of Maxie, an exotic resident.

Worried owners of the coati, a racoon-like creature originally from central America, launched an appeal after it escaped from its home in Andoversford. He was thought to be at large somewhere in Whittington or Charlton Kings. A mass hunt was under way for the animal, who was described as pepper and salt in colour with a long snout and a bushy tail.
