Summary


I AM often troubled by the swift passing of time, more so than ever this week as I stare down the barrel of December's arrival.

I was heartened, then, to come across some research that identified a part of our brain that measures the passing of time. Apparently, when other bits of the brain are heavily in use our concentration is shifted away from the one that measures time, so we sense time passing quickly. I take much comfort from this, as it surely indicates my old cerebrum being pretty busy - unless it has merely been occupied with the question of how time passes so quickly... One thing is certain, time is nothing if not utterly persistent. And thoughts of time and tenacity took me back to carers James and Anne, parents to Alastair, who featured in this column last year.
