MAYOR Barbara Drive has waded into the debate over introducing new pay and display metres in Cheltenham. Mrs Driver believes that proposals to sweeten the pill by offering motorists free parking for the first hour are unrealistic. Gloucestershire County Council is drawing up plans to introduce meters across Cheltenham later this year, despite concerns from traders it will damage business.

Earlier this week borough cabinet member John Rawson (LD) called for free parking after 6pm, the first hour of parking to be free and no charges on Sundays.
