BEWARE the wrath of a lady gardener. My job is to keep the lawns and hedges tidy while my wife does the flowers. However, when I thought I spotted a bindweed poking its ugly head through a bush I decide to take immediate action. Big mistake. The more I tugged the more there seemed to be lurking out of sight and I was still tugging when my wife suddenly appeared. Mistake number two.
Exit stage left - well kitchen actually - with tail well and truly drooping between legs. Apparently it wasn't bindweed, but a cunning lookalike with an unpronounceable name. Well how was I to know? The good news is you don't need to know about Latin names or anything else greenfingered to enter Up Hatherley in Bloom. You may not be Capability Brown, but what the heck - enter anyway. It's all a bit of fun and everybody gets a mention or a prize. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I did so enjoy pruning a tree in my son's garden. Whether he agreed when he came back and found a large stump I am not so sure, but it will grow again soon - I hope.See the full content of this document
