Gchq has to Keep Promise ; Gloucestershire Echo

Summary

HAS the credit crunch even claimed the war on terror? GCHQ will no doubt argue that the work they do to protect our country will not be jeopardised by the latest twist in the saga over the future of its main Benhall site. The agency has gone to great lengths throughout the various planning stages of the proposed expansion to convince people living near the landmark Doughnut of its merits.

While many local people were concerned when the planned new buildings were given the go-ahead, it seemed that the venture was crucial to GCHQ. The agency clearly wanted to move all staff from its Oakley centre and concentrate its future on Benhall. GCHQ surely wouldn't have gone through all those meetings and discussed a new travel plan for the area if there had been any indications that the scheme was in jeopardy. The news has not been greeted with uncontrolled celebrations by organisations like Benhall Residents' Association. They are still concerned that the parking issues they suffer at the moment will continue. It is to GCHQ's credit that it has been up-front about the reasons for the change of heart.
