CHESIL Beach can be an eerie place. A friend, John, once suggested we try night fishing from the 18 mile long sliver of shingle that sea-snakes its way between Dorset's coastline and the open sea from West Bay to the Isle of Portland.

We arrived in the gloaming of a heavy summer's day when not a breath of breeze worried the surface of a mirror-like English Channel.
