BY the time you read this, I'll be sampling the delights of sunny Birmingham for the autumn Lib Dem conference.

Yes, it's that time of year again when politicians used to drift off to seaside resorts, indulge in byzantine policy debates and be cheerfully fleeced by hotel bars who knew a good thing when they saw one. These days party managers prefer businesslike city conference centres, having finally realised that going within 100 miles of a beach or a donkey never made good publicity. Remember Neil Kinnock stumbling into the waves at Brighton? So does everyone else. Our chums in the media love Lib Dem conferences, which still have real debates and votes and occasionally give the leadership a black eye. Our spring conference this year sent MPs back to Westminster with a resounding mandate to sort out the NHS bill.
