CHELTENHAM Borough Council has forked out nearly half a million pounds on CCTV cameras in the past three years. New figures show the authority spent Pounds 492,511 on the equipment during the period - more than in any other part of Gloucestershire.

Council bosses claim the outlay is justified because it makes the town centre a safer place.
