Summary
NICK CLEGG Cheltenham Town Hall NICK Clegg has called for the MP expenses system to be overhauled "from top to toe". Speaking at Cheltenham Literature Festival yesterday, the Liberal Democrat leader was quizzed on a range of topics, including his party's chances at the next general election, balancing politics with family life, and the 'crunch' issue of MP expenses. Earlier this week Mr Clegg was asked to repay Pounds 910 in parliamentary expenses for gardening costs at his second home, following a request from Sir Thomas Legg, who is carrying out an audit of MP expenses. But speaking at the Town Hall's Inkpot yesterday, Mr Clegg said it was better not to "quibble" about the repayment, but to get on with cleaning the system up for good.
"I though there was no point in arguing. If we don't respond to this audit, then nothing will change. I want to get over it and see the system cleaned up from top to toe." He said it was important to prevent "big abuses", such as MPs manipulating the expense system to 'flip' their second home, and avoid capital gains tax.See the full content of this document
